Plan & Protect
Reduce risks and enjoy peace of mind with these tips and insights to protect what matters most.
Steps you take this fall to maintain your home can keep you warm this winter and protect your property from loss. Finding a professional on short notice or during bad winter weather may be difficult so don’t wait until a problem occurs to take action or make repairs.
Before cold weather arrives, remove leaves and other debris from your gutters. First, get rid of the large particles by hand, and then use a scraping tool and water hose. Improper gutter drainage can damage the roof, foundation or basement if you have one. Sparks or embers from a chimney could also ignite dry leaves or other debris in your gutters.
Be sure to store hoses in a dry place. Once you’ve removed the hose, close the inside valve and then open the spigots to drain the remaining water. For winter, you should also install insulated faucet covers for outside spigots.
For areas that receive heavy snowfall it is wise to prepare items such as, a snow shovel in good condition and a snowblower stored somewhere easily accessible.
You should also change your furnace filter regularly; every three months is typical.
Be careful to not overdo it; too much insulation could create poor ventilation and mold growth.
A professionally cleaned chimney removes creosote and prevents uncontrolled fire hazards and puff backs.
Adding insulation can help prevent pipes from freezing later and causing breaks and water damage. It’s also important to know where your water main shut-off is in your home. Consider hanging a tag or sign on it for easy identification.
Consider adding a low temperature sensor to your central station alarm system.
Water damage could destroy precious valuables or displace you and your family. Learn more about the types of water shut-off systems and talk to your independent agent about which option is right for you.
