Hospitality Guidance for Mixed-Use Requests

In this unique time, hotels may host guests who have been exposed to or who test positive for COVID-19. This may include promoting amenities for first responders and medical professionals through a designated Caregiver Discount Program or hosting individuals who are self-isolating.   


Hotels have a duty to take reasonable steps to provide a safe environment for employees and guests. Before engaging in these adapted mixed-use operations, such as a Caregiver Discount Program, consider these guidelines to help manage risks:

  • Work with your legal counsel to determine if this arrangement is in your best interest from a business liability perspective. 
  • Take reasonable steps to ensure all guests are informed of the use of the facility for medical professionals potentially exposed to and who may have COVID-19. Consider either signage posted at the outside entrances or front desk – as well as on the hotel’s website – with employees asking all guests to acknowledge they have been informed of the increased risk; have guests sign an acknowledgment form developed by qualified legal counsel.
  • Set up a wing or floor designated to house guests who identify as self-isolating or confirm they are health care workers.
  • Close all common areas of the hotel, including pools, fitness centers and dining areas; ask everyone to practice social distancing and avoid large groups.
  • Take steps to ensure your employees are safe and have proper personal protective equipment available. Provide training on the use of PPE.
  • Talk with your employees about the exposures related to having high-risk COVID-19 guests residing in the facility.
  • Comply with CDC, state and local guidelines for disinfection of institutions with overnight guests. As COVID-19 evolves, these procedures and services may be updated. Check regularly to make sure you are following the latest guidance.
  • Follow CDC and OSHA guidelines on proper reporting procedures for positive identification of COVID-19 patients.
  • Consider using signage at all entryways if the Caregiver Discount Program is extended.
